About EIRA Psychotherapy: more than a name

EIRA as an acronym emphasises the connection between Empathy, Insight, Reflection and Analysis as building blocks of therapeutic work that takes a psychodynamic approach. The name is also inspired by a character in Norse mythology and poetry whose healing arts were well known. In Old Norse Eir means protection, help and mercy. EIRA Psychotherapy is a place of acceptance and personal development through therapeutic dialogue. Welcome!

Why seek therapy?

We all experience difficulties at different times in our lives. These challenging moments can find expression in anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, relationship problems, family dynamics or a general feeling of confinement and helplessness. The feeling of being in a confining space that is closing in on us, with no clear way out in sight, can be reminiscent of getting lost in a labyrinth.

Psychotherapeutic exploration – metaphor for self-awareness and insight, looking beyond at the horizon

Insights = reflection + empathy

In psychodynamic psychotherapy, the therapist and patient work together to bring unconscious patterns to the surface and help the patient deal with repressed emotions. This process is based on talking (hence "talk therapy"), free association of thoughts and the development of introspective and analytical skills. The client's self-awareness is strengthened by exploring inner spaces that have been previously inaccessible to consciousness. A change of perspective makes it possible to walk through these narrow and often dark spaces and find a way forward.

About your therapist

Claudia Merli, psychodynamic therapist – founder of EIRA Psychotherapy

Claudia Merli Psychodynamic conversational therapist / Associate professor, cultural anthropologist

I am a Samtalsterapeut (English: conversational therapist) working with a psychodynamic orientation, specifically psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I obtained my certificate for Stage-1 Psychodynamic Theory and Practice from Göteborgs Psykoterapi Institut.

My academic background is in Cultural Anthropology (PhD 2008, Docent 2018 Uppsala University) and I have been a researcher for more than 20 years, primarily in the fields of medical anthropology and disaster anthropology. My original interest in medical anthropology stems from the history of ethnopsychiatry, and the study of certain patterns of behaviour that deviate from the accepted norms in their cultural and social settings.

Cultural diversity and the social context of the person sitting across from me are of primary importance in my approach to the therapeutic encounter and in exploring the path to well-being. EIRA Psychotherapy aims to offer a therapeutic place where diversity is an asset and not a hindrance.
